Distribution Package Testing

Distribution testing validates how your packaging performs across the real-world conditions of shipping and handling, so problems are found in the lab before they reach a carrier, retailer, or customer.

What Is Distribution Package Testing?

Distribution package testing simulates the physical hazards a packaged product encounters through a supply chain: vibration from transport vehicles, shock events  at handling points, compression from stacking, shocks from sudden deceleration, and low-pressure conditions at altitude. Testing measures whether packaging survives those hazards with product and packaging integrity intact.

TEN-E tests packaging across the full range of distribution configurations, from small parcel shipments to palletized loads and crated freight, against the ISTA, ASTM, ISO, and Amazon program standards that govern distribution performance requirements. Test results provide documented evidence that packaging performs through its intended distribution environment before it reaches the market.

Why Does Distribution Package Testing Matter?

Packaging that fails in distribution generates customer complaints, returns, and replacement costs. For products sold through retailers or e-commerce platforms with program compliance requirements, packaging failure can also mean a failed qualification, a rejected shipment, or removal from a preferred shipping program.

ISTA-certified test results are required for Amazon SIOC, Frustration-Free Packaging, and Sam’s Club program qualifications. ASTM D4169 results are referenced in freight classification and carrier compliance contexts. TEN-E’s ISTA certification at two lab locations (ST-2135 in Newport, MN and ST-10492 in High Point, NC) and APASS certification for Amazon programs mean test reports carry the standing those programs require for qualification submissions.

Who Is Distribution Package Testing For?

E-Commerce

E-commerce brands validate parcel packaging to ISTA and Amazon program standards before products ship directly to customers.

Consumer Goods

Consumer goods manufacturers confirm that retail and club shipping cases survive stacking and freight distribution.

Automotive

Automotive parts shippers validate packaging for the drop, vibration, and compression of ground and freight distribution.

Accreditations That Apply

Every distribution testing program is built from recognized procedures, run on calibrated equipment, and backed by laboratory accreditation and program certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both ISTA and ASTM D4169 simulate distribution hazards, but they structure the testing differently. ISTA procedures are defined end to end by ISTA and are accepted directly by retailers and certification programs. Amazon and Sam’s Club require results from ISTA-specific procedures under their member programs. ASTM D4169 is a manufacturer-directed test: the shipper selects the performance cycle based on distribution channel and product fragility, then designs the test sequence accordingly. ASTM D4169 results are commonly used for freight classification and internal engineering validation. Many packaging programs reference both frameworks, and TEN-E tests to either or both depending on project requirements

Yes. TEN-E tests distribution packaging for ground, air, and rail distribution environments. The applicable test procedures and intensity levels vary by transport mode: air cargo shipments face low-pressure and vibration conditions specific to aircraft, while ground and rail shipments face different vibration profiles and shock events. For projects requiring multi-modal validation, we confirm the applicable standards and test sequences for each transport mode.

TEN-E accommodates packaging from small parcel shipments through palletized and crated freight configurations. . Contact us with your package dimensions and weight to confirm the applicable procedures.

Amazon’s packaging certification programs use ISTA 6 member performance test procedures, which are specific to the Amazon distribution environment. To qualify for Amazon SIPP, FFP, PFP, or Over Boxing certification, packaging must be tested at an APASS-certified laboratory using the applicable ISTA 6 procedure. TEN-E holds APASS certification and performs all four Amazon program tests. See the Amazon Package Testing page for full program details.
